IPgeocode Driver installation problem

Hi,

I am excited to play with Windows 7 Location and Sensors platform.

Unfortunately, when I run the Install.cmd script, it says that "devcon.exe failed".

This is what I'm using. Windows 7 RC 64.

I downloaded http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272 devcon.exe and I moved the 64 bit version to the execution path: "\IPgeocodeDriver-SignedBinaries-20090605\x64" I ran cmd.exe as Administrator.

Here's the full output:

">Install.cmd

>REM

>REM Script to install the IP Geocode Location Platform UMDF driver

>REM

>REM The tool devcon.exe, from the WDK, must be in your path. (It's

>REM not redistributable.)

>REM

>copy IPGeoDll.dll C:\Windows\system32

        1 file(s) copied.

>devcon.exe install IPgeocode.inf "Sensors\IPgeocode"

devcon.exe failed."

Thanks for any feedback!

could it be with the version of devcon i'm using?

I downloaded it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272

Is this the same version as the one supplied in the WDK? If not can you post the exe?

thanks!

I'm using the version of devcon.exe that came with the Windows 7 Beta DDK. That, or a more recent one (RC or RTM, when it's available) should be fine. One challenge, however, is that the Win 7 DDK is only available via MSDN or other Microsoft support agreements. And I can't post that tool, since it's explicitly not redistributable.

Regarding the 64-bit issue, I would recommend the following:

  1. Ensure that you're using a 64-bit version of devcon, ideally for Win 7 as I mentioned above.
  2. Boot your system with the option that bypasses driver signature checking. Otherwise, all drivers must be signed by WHQL on 64-bit Windows, and we didn't have the budget to do that for this project. (Note - I don't know for certain that WHQL signing is enforced on UMDF drivers, but I would assume it is unless you can confirm otherwise.)
  3. Or, try the install on a 32-bit system, just to confirm that it works for you. Then tackle 64-bit.

So i downloaded the Windows 7 WDK from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2105564e-1a9a-4bf4-8d74-ec5b52da3d00&displaylang=en . They just released to the general public.

But, I search through the disc..and I couldn't find devcon.exe.

Can you provide the file path?

Thanks!
